“In the Absence of Care” is a moving-image work that explores the illusion of domestic and ecological stability.

The photographs represented are from my maternal family archives, depicting my mother’s childhood over 50 years ago. Family archives are a way for humans to resist mortality and establish a sense of permanence. Photographs are often understood as freezing time, but mould operates according to an entirely different logic.

Viewed through a microscopic lens, the mould structures and photographs are removed from their familiar contexts. Through this technological lens, details that would otherwise remain invisible to the human eye are revealed. This altered perspective shifts how we perceive both subjects: the mould becomes less recognisable as something disgusting, while the photographs lose some of their sentiment and emotion.
